Answers to common questions about Fish Happens private fishing charters from Bass River: choosing a trip, booking a date, preparing your group, and understanding catch arrangements.

Choosing your trip

What fishing trips does Fish Happens offer from Cape Cod?

Standard private options are striped bass for six hours, bluefin tuna for twelve hours, fluke for ten hours, and cod for eight hours. Canyon, overnight, and custom offshore requests are arranged individually. Confirm availability for your dates.

What are the published private charter prices?

Striped bass is $850 for six hours; bluefin tuna is $2,000 for twelve hours; fluke is $1,650 for ten hours; and cod is $1,800 for eight hours. These are private trip prices, not per-person prices. Custom trips require a quote.

Which charter is a good starting point for a family?

Discuss the six-hour striped bass trip first because it is the shortest standard itinerary. Share children’s ages, the full passenger count, experience, and comfort on the water. The captain confirms whether the proposed trip suits your group.

How many guests can come on the boat?

Confirm the permitted passenger count with the captain before reserving. Include everyone, including children, in your request. Do not infer passenger capacity from the boat’s 42-foot length.

Does trip duration mean that much time actively fishing?

No. A charter’s duration includes travel to and from the grounds and time spent finding fish or moving between areas. Conditions and the selected itinerary affect the actual time fishing.

Is there one best month for every Cape Cod species?

No. Striped bass, fluke, bluefin, and canyon targets have different seasonal patterns. Use the species guides to start planning, then ask about current conditions and legal openings for your actual travel dates.

Booking, payment & weather

How do I request a charter date?

Call (508) 801-8004 or use the booking request form linked from this site. Provide your preferred date, alternatives, trip choice, and full group details. The captain must confirm availability; a submitted form alone does not reserve the boat.

Is a deposit required?

The published Fish Happens policy requires a 25% deposit to reserve a confirmed date. The remaining 75% is due before departure. Review the full booking policy and any written arrangement for your particular trip before paying.

Which payment methods does Fish Happens accept?

The published policy lists cash or check unless another arrangement is confirmed in writing. Contact the captain before sending payment; do not assume that submitting an online request processes a payment.

What happens if I cancel my charter?

The published policy refunds the 25% deposit for customer cancellations received at least 24 hours before departure. Inside 24 hours, the deposit is non-refundable. Communicate the cancellation directly and review the full policy and any written trip-specific terms.

What happens if the captain cancels for unsafe weather?

The published policy offers a full refund of payments received or a full credit toward an available date within twelve months when the captain cancels for unsafe conditions, a significant mechanical issue, or another safety concern. Contact the captain for the decision.

Does rain automatically cancel a fishing charter?

No. Rain alone does not decide the trip. The captain considers the route, wind, sea conditions, visibility, and other factors. Check with the captain before traveling rather than treating a land forecast as the offshore decision.

Can a trip be changed to another species or fishing area?

The published policies allow the captain to adjust the plan when conditions, regulations, or safety require it. Discuss your priorities before booking, especially if you would not want an alternative to one particular target.

Before you arrive & on the boat

Where do I meet the Fish Happens boat?

The departure area is Bass River in South Yarmouth, Cape Cod. The published meeting address is 130 Pleasant Street, South Yarmouth, MA 02664. Confirm the exact dock, arrival time, and parking instructions with the captain; visits are by appointment.

Are rods, reels, and fishing instruction included?

Yes. The published trip information includes tackle, rigging, and crew instruction for the selected trip. Ask in advance if you want to bring your own equipment.

What should I bring on a fishing charter?

Bring food and drinks for the entire trip, layers, weather protection, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and secure non-marking footwear. Ask about cooler space and any trip-specific requirements before bringing bulky equipment.

Can children join a Fish Happens charter?

Discuss children’s ages and approximate weights, the trip length, and their boating experience with the captain before booking. That information helps the team assess the trip and arrange suitable life jackets. Include children in the full passenger count.

What if someone has boarding or mobility needs?

Contact the captain before reserving. Discuss boarding, steps, seating, time standing, and the demands of the proposed trip. Do not assume that a particular accommodation is available without confirmation.

Are the two Fish Happens websites separate charter businesses?

No. FishHappens-Charters.com and Fish-Happens.com represent the same Fish Happens Charters operation, captain, and boat. This site helps compare and plan trips; the original site also carries reports, fishing background, and the shared booking form.

Fish, catch & expectations

Is catching fish guaranteed?

No. No trip guarantees a particular species, size, number of fish, or retained catch. Fish movement, conditions, and regulations affect each charter. Choose a trip for the fishing experience rather than a promised quantity of fish.

Can guests take fish home?

Only legal catch may be retained, and taking fish home is not guaranteed. Ask about the arrangements for your specific trip before booking. Bluefin tuna also have a specific ownership policy that guests should review.

Who owns a commercially retained bluefin tuna?

Under the published Fish Happens policy, commercially eligible bluefin retained under the vessel’s permits remain the property of Fish Happens Charters. Legal recreational catch may be shared at the captain’s discretion. Booking a charter does not transfer ownership of a commercial tuna.

Where can I check current fishing limits?

Use the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and NOAA Fisheries resources linked from the species guides. The applicable rules can depend on the species, date, area, and vessel permits. The captain confirms how they apply to the trip.
